Reuse Strategies & Circle Introduction

Before a building is demolished, do you know what assets are inside?

Doors, flooring, fixtures, furniture, panels, lighting, glass, metal, wood, and interior materials can all hold value beyond their original use. Yet once demolition begins, it becomes much harder to identify, document, and repurpose these materials.

This is why asset management matters.

A circular economy in construction does not start after waste is created. It starts before demolition — when materials can still be seen, measured, mapped, and connected to future projects.

In this issue, we explore why reuse strategies are essential for reducing waste and carbon impact, and introduce Circle, matinno’s Reuse Map and asset management tool designed to help turn existing materials into future resources.

The Waste Problem in Building Materials

Construction does not only shape cities — it also generates a significant amount of waste.

From demolition and renovation to exhibitions, temporary installations, and interior updates, many materials are discarded before the end of their potential life. Wood, panels, fixtures, furniture, flooring, glass, metal, and other components often become waste simply because there is no easy way to find their next use.

This is one of the biggest challenges in moving toward a circular construction industry: valuable materials exist, but the information around them is often fragmented, invisible, or difficult to access.

Why Reuse Strategies Matter

Reuse is one of the most practical ways to reduce environmental impact in construction.

By reusing materials that already exist, projects can reduce waste, lower the need for new material production, and decrease embodied carbon associated with extraction, manufacturing, and transport.

But reuse does not happen by chance. It requires strategy.

A strong reuse strategy considers:

  • What materials are available

  • Where they are located

  • What condition they are in

  • When they can be used

  • Which projects could benefit from them

When materials are planned and managed as resources, reuse becomes more than a sustainability idea — it becomes a practical design and procurement strategy.

From Old Buildings to New Projects

Circular construction asks us to rethink the end of a project.

Instead of seeing demolition or renovation as the final stage, we can see it as the beginning of a new material journey. Materials from completed buildings, temporary spaces, events, and exhibitions can be recovered, documented, and redirected into new projects.

This shift changes how we think about value.

A completed project does not have to become waste. It can become a material bank for what comes next.

What is matinno’s Circle (Reuse Map)?

Circle is matinno’s new Reuse Map and asset management tool. It visualizes reusable materials across projects and regions, while also helping teams track materials, inventory, and reusable resources in one place.

With Circle:

  • Designers can discover materials ready to be reused in their projects.

  • Manufacturers can reduce slow-moving inventory and activate surplus inventory.

  • Project teams can manage materials, assets, and reuse opportunities more efficiently.

  • Completed projects can become resources for what comes next.

Circle maps material flows across regions — turning waste into opportunity and circularity into real implementation.

To celebrate the launch, all new users can try Circle free for 2 weeks.

Turning Reuse Into Implementation

The challenge of reuse is not only finding materials. It is making them visible, traceable, and usable at the right time. Circle supports this by helping teams distribute material information more efficiently and connect reusable resources with future demand. Reuse is no longer just a sustainability concept. It is becoming a practical strategy for reducing waste, lowering carbon impact, and creating new value from existing materials.

With Circle, matinno aims to make this transition easier to see, manage, and implement.

Stay tuned for our next issue, where we will continue exploring how digital tools can help solve some of the construction industry’s biggest sustainability challenges.
