From Data to Action —
Digital Tools for Green Transformation in Construction

Green Transformation, or GX, is becoming one of the most important shifts for industries in Japan and around the world. For the construction industry, GX is not only about reducing emissions. It is about changing how materials are selected, used, managed, reused, and circulated across the entire building lifecycle.
As climate tech continues to grow, one of the most important questions for the construction industry is: how can data help us reduce waste, lower CO₂ emissions, and make circular design easier to implement? Circular construction requires more than good intentions. It requires visibility, coordination, and measurable information across the entire material lifecycle. This is where digital tools become critical.
In this issue, we explore how GX and climate tech can support the transition toward circular construction, and why matinno was created as a digital tool for this shift.
The Problem: Material Data Is Still Fragmented
In architecture and construction, material information is often scattered across product catalogs, PDF files, spreadsheets, emails, individual project folders, and personal networks. This makes it difficult for designers, manufacturers, contractors, and project owners to make decisions based on reliable and comparable information.
For example, a designer may want to choose lower-carbon materials, but the necessary environmental data may be incomplete or hard to compare. A manufacturer may have sustainable or surplus materials, but no effective way to make them visible to future projects. A completed project may contain valuable assets, but without proper documentation, those assets can be lost during demolition.
The challenge is not only material availability. It is material visibility.

Why matinno Was Created as a Digital Tool
NewNormDesign has worked for years in sustainable architecture, circular material design, and real-world project implementation.Through these projects, we saw a repeated challenge: the industry did not lack good ideas. It lacked the digital infrastructure to make those ideas practical, measurable, and scalable.
Sustainable materials were difficult to discover. CO₂ impact was difficult to compare. Reusable assets were difficult to track. Project teams often relied on manual coordination and fragmented information. matinno was created to solve this gap.
As a digital platform, matinno connects material discovery, sustainability data, CO₂ scoring, project management, matching, and reuse mapping into one workflow. Our goal is to help the industry move from fragmented information to informed action.
From Data to Better Decisions
Digital tools can help construction teams make better decisions at each stage of a project. Before design begins, teams can search for sustainable or reusable materials. Before procurement, they can compare material data and environmental impact. Before demolition, they can identify valuable assets and plan for reuse. During project management, they can track materials, locations, status, and future opportunities.
This is how data becomes action.
When material information is structured and visible, project teams can reduce uncertainty, save time, support circular design, and make sustainability easier to implement.

Looking Ahead
GX in construction will require more than ambitious targets. It will require practical tools that help turn material data into better decisions.
As climate tech continues to evolve, the next challenge is not simply collecting more data, but making that data visible, connected, and actionable across the entire building lifecycle.
At matinno, we believe digital tools are not the final goal. They are the infrastructure that allows circularity to move from concept to implementation.
Looking ahead, the question is how we can make material information more transparent and useful across the construction ecosystem. In our next issue, we will explore how material transparency can become a new competitive advantage for manufacturers, designers, and the wider construction industry.
